Maharashtra government on Monday announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased who died after falling off a local train in Mumbai. Four passengers were dead and six others sustained injuries after falling off a local train en route to Thane's Kasara area from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Thane Police confirmed.
The incident took place during peak hours, causing alarm among commuters. As per report, railway officials reached the spot and the injured were taken to a hospital. The deceased were in the age group of 30 to 35 years.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident "extremely unfortunate" and said the Railways will investigate the case.
Initial reports suggest that the passengers were travelling while hanging on to the doors and fell due to overcrowding in the train.
Railways announces automatic door closers for locals
After the incident, the Railways has decided that all rakes under manufacturing for Mumbai Suburban will have automatic door closer facilities. Moreeover, the Railways will redesign all rakes to enable them with the door closure facility.
Giving information about the deaths that happened after falling from a Mumbai local train due to overcrowding, Central Railway CPRO Swapnil Neela assures that they there would be trains with automatic door closure facility soon to avert such incidents, PTI reported.
"The incident that has happened, the guard of the train plying between CSMT and Kasara informed us, eight people had fallen on track, ambulance was arranged by Railway to send them to hospital, it reached around 9:50 am, these people were travelling on footboard of the local train. Now, new trains that are coming, will have automatic door closure facility, to avert such incidents," the Central Railway CPRO was quoted by PTI.
Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member from Thane, Naresh Mhaske has demanded a probe into the deaths. "The cause of the incident needs to be addressed. How did they fall...was there a crowd, were they pushed, was there a fight," he told a regional news channel.
