A late-night accident in Narayan Peth, Pune, triggered chaos and outrage after a speeding car, allegedly driven by an intoxicated youth, hit a disabled pedestrian walking along the roadside.
According to the locals, the vehicle was carrying a group of youngsters who were allegedly returning from a party when the driver lost control and rammed into the man, Punekar News reported.
Videos shared on social media show the accused youth shouting, “I’m a policeman’s son, don’t touch me, don’t beat me!” as residents confronted him moments after the crash.
Police officials from Vishrambaug Police Station reached the spot soon after receiving a call. The police shifted the injured pedestrian to a nearby hospital, where he received first aid. Meanwhile, the driver, along with two young men and two young women who were travelling with him, were taken into custody for questioning.
Witnesses said that the occupants who stepped out of the car appeared disoriented, with suspicions of drunk driving. Locals demanded strict action and got into a brief argument with the youths until the police intervened and brought the situation under control.
Residents also claimed that there were attempts to settle the issue privately soon after the accident.
Police later stated that the injured man did not suffer any major injuries. Since neither side filed a formal complaint, the matter was closed following a mutual settlement. All individuals involved were released after questioning, according to the report.
