A group of students of the Osmania University (OU) in Hyderabad held a protest on Tuesday after a blade was allegedly found in a curry served at their hostel mess, Telangana Today reported.
The students from the New Godavari hostel held a protest on Tuesday night with the food container and demanded justice. The students blocked the university’s main road while chanting slogans against the university administration.
The students have demanded vice chancellor Prof M Kumar to address their concerns. According to the students, the razor blade incident is one of the many such incidents which frequently take place in the university. The protestors alleged that worms were found in the cabbage curry served at the mess a few days ago.
“Previously, a student found glass pieces in the food. Every time we raise the issue, the mess staff assures us it won’t happen again, but the problems keep recurring,” Chelimela Druhan, an MA Philosophy student and Osmania University ABVP president, told Telangana Today.
“We are being billed Rs 2,500- Rs 3,000 per month for substandard food served in the hostel mess. Despite our numerous pleas to the university administration seeking a solution, the issue persists,” he added.
While raising questions on the poor mess management, concerns about the hostel's continuous water problems were also voiced by the students. “The hostels don't have a consistent water supply. Although we are unsure of the water's source, water tankers are being used. Students get sick all the time,” the protestors said. They urged the management to establish a borewell rather than relying on tankers.
Several students at Telangana's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) reported becoming sick earlier in February after eating at the college canteen. However, the administration claimed that the students suffered from food poisoning after consuming food from outside the campus, saying only 27 students had fallen ill.
