A 17-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in a Gurugram hospital after being shot by a classmate in a vacant residential flat in the early hours of Sunday. Police said the accused and another boy who was with him at the time of the incident have been apprehended and sent to a correction home in Faridabad.
The victim, a Class XI student, was allegedly shot using his classmate’s father’s licensed revolver in Sector 48’s Central Park society. During questioning, the accused revealed that the victim was looking at something on his mobile phone and did not respond to his question, despite being asked thrice. This "angered" the accused and prompted him to open fire, the officer said.
The chain of events began unfolding on Saturday evening. As detailed in the mother’s police complaint, one of the suspects repeatedly called her son, insisting he meet him. After initial reluctance, the victim agreed and was picked up near the Kherki Dhaula toll plaza. From there, he, the main suspect and another friend proceeded to a vacant flat owned by the main suspect’s father, a property dealer.
It was in this empty flat that the shooting occurred around midnight. Police were alerted by the control room at approximately 1.20 am. A team was dispatched, but the injured teenager had already been rushed to Medanta Hospital in Sector 38 by his family. Doctors have described his condition as critical.
According to reports, crime and forensic teams scoured the scene, recovering a pistol, a magazine, five live cartridges and one empty shell from the room. A further search yielded another magazine and 65 live cartridges stored in a box.
Police reportedly said that their initial investigation points to a heated argument between the victim and the main suspect at their school approximately two months ago as a potential motive.
The suspects were tracked down and apprehended within hours. During questioning, one of them revealed that the pistol was licensed to his father and was ordinarily kept at their house. Sandeep Turan, Public Relations Officer of Gurugram police, confirmed a First Information Report had been registered against both boys for attempt to murder and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
The case has drawn a high-level response. Haryana’s Director General of Police, OP Singh, took to the social media platform X to describe the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and to pray for the victim’s recovery. In his post, he expressed concern over a “generation raised on video games” which “often fail to understand that gunfire is not a game.”
He directed all district police chiefs to take preventive measures, including alerting arms license holders about the threats of improper storage and arranging necessary training. He further urged that “parents and schools must focus on teaching children people skills and conflict resolution so that such violent confrontations never arise.”
