A routine family gathering in West Delhi ended in tragedy late Sunday night, claiming the lives of three generations from a single family in a devastating motorcycle accident.
The incident has plunged the household into deep despair, leaving behind a web of grief and an uncertain future.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Shahid, the family patriarch, his son Faiz and 12-year-old grandson Hamza were returning from a relative’s birthday party in Nawada. They were on a single motorcycle when the horrific crash occurred near the Mukundpur Flyover on the Outer Ring Road.
The women of the family, travelling separately in a cab, lost their way and called Shahid’s phone for directions. Instead of his voice, a stranger answered.
The stranger delivered the shattering news, The Indian Express cited. He said, “I don’t know who you are but the person to whom the phone belongs has been in an accident, they’re dead.” The accident has not merely bereaved one family. It has destroyed three.
Faiz was a new father, having welcomed a baby boy just a month ago. His wife, Sabira, is now inconsolable and has suffered frequent fainting spells from the shock. “She has a two-year-old and a month-old baby… I don’t know how they’ll survive,” Aarif, Shahid’s son-in-law, was cited by The Indian Express.
Hamza and his mother, Sahana, had travelled from Saharanpur to visit the newborn. Sahana is now in deep shock, desperate to return home. Her family, however, fears the reaction there.
“We know how in-laws work. They’re already blaming her for her son’s death. They’re telling her if she hadn’t left for Delhi, none of this would have happened,” Aarif said.
Heena, Shahid’s eldest daughter, has been unable to speak since the incident. Aarif shared that she shared an exceptionally deep bond with her father and was his favourite child.
The loss is also profoundly practical. Shahid and Faiz were the primary breadwinners, working long hours as flex operators to support the household of seven.
Aarif remembered Shahid as a devoted and hardworking man. He would wake before dawn, make breakfast for himself and Faiz, and manage all household errands as his wife suffers from a thyroid condition.
Faiz, meanwhile, was a skilled worker with a childlike spirit. “With children, he would become like a child around them… he’d talk and play just like them,” Aarif recalled to The Indian Express.
With the main earners gone, the family faces a precarious financial and logistical future. While four sons-in-law have agreed to provide monetary support, the day-to-day running of the household remains a daunting question.
