Bengaluru witnessed a major spike in vehicle registrations this October. An average of 2,774 new vehicles hit the roads every day. This comes at a time when the city is already struggling with heavy traffic.
Why the Sudden Surge?
Officials say two factors played a key role:
* Festive buying
* Recent tax cuts on select vehicles
According to transport department data cited by TOI, registrations shot up 46% in just one month.
Sharp Month-on-Month Rise
* September registrations: 56,831
* October registrations: 86,014
The daily average increased from 1,894 in September to 2,774 in October. This is among the highest monthly increases in recent years.
Two-Wheelers Dominate
Most of the new vehicles registered were two-wheelers.
Daily additions in October:
* 1,900 motorcycles and scooters
* 514 cars
Bengaluru now has 1.2 crore registered vehicles:
* 83.8 lakh two-wheelers
* 24 lakh cars
GST Cut Boosted Sales
A senior RTO official said the tax reduction was a game changer. The revised GST rates came into effect on September 22. Many buyers waited to take advantage of the lower tax.
The GST rate was cut from 28% to 18% for:
* Two-wheelers up to 350cc
* Small petrol cars (under 1,200cc and 4 metres long)
* Small diesel cars (under 1,500cc and 4 metres long)
Big Gain for State Revenue
The transport department collected Rs 230 crore more in October compared to last year, Transport Commissioner Yogeesh AM was quoted by TOI as saying.
* October 2024 revenue: Rs 1,157 crore
* October 2025 revenue: Rs 1,387 crore
He also said car registrations below Rs 10 lakh increased by 4,000 compared to last year.
Ambitious Target Ahead
The transport department is a key revenue generator for Karnataka. It aims to collect Rs 15,000 crore in the 2025-26 financial year.
