Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday warned that any direct involvement by the United States in the ongoing war between Israel and Iran would be “very, very dangerous for everyone,” as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul after returning from failed peace talks in Geneva, Araghchi said U.S. military intervention would be “very unfortunate” and could push the conflict into uncharted and perilous territory.
“Negotiations cannot take place while bombs are falling,” he added, ruling out dialogue with Washington as long as Israeli strikes persist.
His warning comes just hours after Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran’s key nuclear facility in Isfahan.
According to Iran’s state-affiliated Fars News Agency, multiple explosions were heard overnight as air defense systems engaged incoming threats.
Officials said there was no hazardous leak or risk to public safety, despite the attack on a highly sensitive site.
“Most of the explosive sounds were related to air defense activity,” an Iranian security official told Fars, confirming that the Isfahan nuclear complex was among the locations targeted.
Against this backdrop, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to ease his rhetoric, saying a military strike on Iran “maybe won’t be necessary”, a marked shift from earlier warnings of possible U.S. intervention.
Trump’s comments come as he faces mounting pressure both at home and abroad to avoid dragging the United States into another prolonged Middle East conflict. The White House had previously stated that Trump would decide within two weeks whether to support Israeli military efforts directly.
Speaking to reporters, Trump dismissed European diplomatic efforts and suggested Iran was looking to speak directly with Washington. “They want to speak to us, not Europe,” he said. “Europe won’t be able to help.”
Israel’s targeting of the Isfahan site marks one of the most high-stakes moments in the conflict so far, as the facility plays a critical role in Iran’s nuclear program. The Israeli military has claimed its recent operations have significantly delayed Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Iran, in turn, has vowed to retaliate for the attacks and accused Israel of assassinating nuclear scientists and striking key infrastructure in an effort to destabilize the country.
