In an embarrassment for Muhammed Yunus, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer turned down a request to meet the Bangladeshi leader during his visit to London, The Financial Times has reported.
Yunus wanted to meet Starmer in an attempt to recover billions of dollars allegedly siphoned off by the ousted Sheikh Hasina government.
Speaking to Financial Times, Yunus said that UK is "morally obliged" to help his government track down the money.
He said that the UK PM did not agree to meet him but expressed hope that he will help his country recover the "stolen money".
In January, Tulip Siddiq, British Bangladeshi politician, resigned as anti-corruption minister amid allegations of receiving property and other support from people linked to Hasina's Awami League.
Siddiq, who is Sheikh Hasina’s niece, denied any wrongdoing and remains an MP.
She also wrote to Yunus seeking a meeting to address what she called a “misunderstanding” spread by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission. Yunus declined the request.
The Yunus government has estimated that funds worth nearly $234 billion were misappropriated during Hasina's rule with UK being the top destination for the "stolen" money, the report said.
Yunus urged the support of the UK government and the "people of Great Britain" to help track down the money, saying that his trip to the country was just the beginning.
Yunus, a Nobel laureate, is heading the interim government in Bangladesh since the deposition of Hasina in August last year. Hasina is currently in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Yunus faced massive demonstration outside his hotel from Bangladeshi-origin protesters when he arrived in London earlier this week.
Several British Bangladeshis who are part of the the UK branch of the Awami League gathered outside the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair and changed slogans against Yunus, telling him to “go back.”
