PM Modi announces 2026 as ASEAN-India year of maritime cooperation

At the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the strength of India’s ties with ASEAN, describing it as a partnership that has endured through “times of uncertainties.” Speaking virtually at the event, he noted that “India in every step has stood beside its ASEAN brothers,” underscoring the consistency of India’s engagement with the regional bloc.

Modi also praised Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, saying, “PM and my friend Anwar Ibrahim, you have given me this opportunity to join the ASEAN family, and I am happy for it. I congratulate you on the successful summit.”

Referring to the shared roots between India and ASEAN, Modi said, “India and ASEAN account for one-fourth of the world's population. We share more than just geography, we share historical cultural ties.”

He said that 2026 would be celebrated as the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation and highlighted expanding collaboration in key sectors such as education, tourism, science and technology, green energy, and cybersecurity.
