Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has strongly condemned and expressed solidarity with India following the recent attack terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the life of 26 civilians.
“We have followed with sorrow the news of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of and injured dozens of innocent civilian tourists as a result of a criminal shooting in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir,” Abbas wrote.
He reaffirmed Palestine’s support for India’s efforts to maintain peace and security, stating, “We strongly condemn and denounce this heinous act, and affirm our support for India in preserving its security and stability.”
President Abbas also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the attack.
“We pray for mercy and peace for the departed, a speedy recovery for the injured, and for continued prosperity and well-being for India and its people. Please accept, Your Excellency, the expression of our deepest sympathy,” the letter concluded.
The attack in Pahalgam has drawn widespread condemnation, with several world leaders voicing their support for India and denouncing the violence.
The attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group widely believed to be a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has triggered a wave of diplomatic and political fallout in the region.
In the wake of the incident, Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, compared the Pahalgam attack to the Hamas-led assault on Israel that took place on October 7, 2023. That attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 people.
New Delhi has responded to the incident by taking a number of severe actions against Islamabad. The Indus Waters Treaty has been suspended, Pakistani visas have been revoked, Indian airspace has been closed to Pakistan, and the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar has been closed.
In response, Pakistan suspended its obligations under the Simla Agreement, a crucial diplomatic framework that has long governed the two countries' bilateral relations.
In addition to widening the diplomatic gap between India and Pakistan, the Pahalgam attack has brought attention to the changing face of terrorism and the growing use of civilian targets in violent crimes.
