A distressing video from Newark Airport shows an Indian student in handcuffs, restrained on the floor, moments before being deported from the United States. The footage, shared on social media by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, captures the student in tears, with Jain alleging that US authorities treated him “like a criminal.”
“As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," wrote Kunal Jain on X, after sharing the video of an Indian student being restrained and deported from Newark Airport.
Jain, who is the President of HealthBots AI, noted that the student was speaking in Haryanvi and appeared visibly distressed.
“I could recognise his accent where he was saying ‘I’m not insane, these people are trying to make me look insane’," he wrote.
Highlighting a worrying trend, Jain added that several such incidents have occurred recently.
Moneycontrol could not verify the authenticity of the footage and claim.
“These children get their visas and get on a flight in the morning. For some reason, they are unable to explain the reason for their visit to the immigration authorities and are sent back on the evening flight tied up like criminals. Every day 3-4 such cases are happening. There have been more such cases in the last few days," he said in the post.
“This poor kids parent won’t know what’s happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar he was to be boarded last night in the same flight with me but he never got boarded. Someone needs to find out what’s going on with him at New Jersey authorities. I found him disoriented," he wrote in another post.
India has strongly raised concerns with the United States over the mistreatment of Indian immigrants, particularly students, who are allegedly being chained and treated like criminals while being deported. Officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington and consulates across the US have conveyed New Delhi’s displeasure through diplomatic channels, urging American authorities to ensure that deportation processes are carried out in a humane and respectful manner.
