With a fragile ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas holding, President Donald Trump has turned his attention to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. He is considering providing Kyiv with long-range weaponry to pressure Moscow into negotiations.

Ending the wars in Ukraine and Gaza formed a central part of Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign, during which he repeatedly criticised President Joe Biden’s handling of both conflicts. Yet, like his predecessor, Trump has faced resistance from President Vladimir Putin, as his efforts to persuade the Russian leader to hold direct talks with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy have so far failed to yield results in the war now approaching its fourth year.

Fresh from brokering the Gaza ceasefire, Trump now appears newly confident about making progress on the Russian front. He is also signalling a readiness to escalate pressure on Putin should the Kremlin refuse to engage in peace talks.

“Interestingly we made progress today, because of what's happened in the Middle East," Trump said of the Russia-Ukraine war on Wednesday evening as he welcomed supporters of his White House ballroom project to a glitzy dinner.
