If you’ve been enjoying YouTube Premium as part of a family plan with friends or relatives who don’t live with you, things are about to change. YouTube has quietly started warning users that the Premium Family Plan will soon be restricted to members living under the same roof.
What’s happening?
Some users recently received an email from YouTube with the subject line: “Your YouTube Premium family membership will be paused.” The message explained that family plans require everyone to live in the same household as the family manager. If YouTube detects otherwise, the Premium access will stop after 14 days.
In simple terms, if your “family” is spread across different cities (or even just different houses), only the person paying for the plan might keep Premium. Everyone else will be pushed back to the free, ad-supported version.
How will YouTube know?
YouTube uses something called an electronic check-in to verify if family members are under one roof. This check reportedly happens every 30 days. If your device location or account data suggests you’re not living in the same household, YouTube can flag it.
Why is YouTube doing this?
The answer is simple: money. Platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have already cracked down on password sharing, forcing people outside of the same household to buy their own subscription. YouTube seems to be taking the same route.
Think about it: if five friends are sharing a ₹189/month family plan (India pricing), YouTube makes just that amount. But if each of them pays individually, YouTube could be making five times more.
Is this happening to everyone?
Not yet. The crackdown doesn’t appear to be widespread at the moment. Many users — even those who are technically breaking the rules — haven’t received any warning emails yet. But this may just be the start of a global rollout.
What should you do?
If you’re on a shared family plan with people outside your household, be prepared. Once the pause hits, you’ll lose Premium perks like ad-free videos, background play, and offline downloads. Your options will be:
–Join a legitimate family plan with people you actually live with.
—Switch to an individual subscription if you still want Premium.
—Stick with the free version of YouTube and watch with ads.
