YouTube is stepping up to tackle one of the biggest problems on the internet — AI-generated deepfakes. The platform has started rolling out a new AI likeness detection tool that helps creators find and remove videos that use their face or voice without permission.
Here’s how it works, in simple terms.
The new feature lives inside YouTube Studio, under a section called Content Detection. When a creator signs up for it, they’ll first need to go through an identity verification process. This means uploading a photo ID and recording a short selfie video, so YouTube can confirm who they are.
Once verified, YouTube’s system begins scanning the platform for videos that might be using that creator’s AI-generated likeness — for instance, a deepfake video where their face appears to say or do things they never did. If the tool detects such videos, the creator will get an alert inside YouTube Studio.
They’ll then see a list of flagged videos showing details like the title, channel name, number of views, and even snippets of dialogue. From there, creators can easily request the removal of any video that uses their likeness without permission.
YouTube says this tool is designed to protect identities and prevent audiences from being misled by fake or manipulated videos. It’s also part of a broader effort to give creators more control over how AI is used on the platform. In addition to likeness detection, creators can also submit copyright removal requests if someone has reused their original videos or audio without approval.
Right now, the feature is being rolled out gradually. Members of the YouTube Partner Program — creators who earn money from their videos — will get access first, especially those who YouTube believes are most likely to need it. The company says all monetized creators should have access to the tool by January 2026.
In short, this new feature gives creators a powerful way to spot deepfakes, protect their identity, and stay in control of how their image is used in the age of AI.
