In Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Black Panther (Azzuri) aren’t exactly friends, certainly not in the beginning of the the upcoming role-playing game that features an original story set in the Marvel Universe.
For people who have seen only the Marvel movies, it is also worth making it clear that the Black Panther in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is not King T’Challa of Wakanda (played by Chadwick Boseman in the MCU). Instead, it is the 1940’s Black Panther Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather. You could also call him the World War 2-era Black Panther.
In the story trailer for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, we see Black Panther getting advised by Wakandan spy Nanali (another playable character in the game) to “stick to the rooftops” when on a mission in 1943’s Paris that's under Nazi Germany’s control. Nanali also warns him that “the American boy” is following him, a moniker the Wakandan spy has given to a young Steve Rogers.
Nanali is the leader of the Wakandan Spy Network present in Nazi-occupied Paris and has planned her covert ops with Black Panther.
Marvel 1943 Rise of Hydra: Captain America and Black Panther don't want to work together
From the story trailer of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, we gather that both the Marvel superheroes are investigating Hydra on their own and don’t like the idea of working together. Captain America distrusts Azzuri and thinks that teaming up with the Black Panther in Paris would make the two superheroes a “two too many”, while Azzuri “doesn’t like to take orders from anyone” and thinks Cap is unworthy to carry the Vibranium shield.
The story trailer of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra reveals the uneasiness of super soldier Captain America Steve Rogers when it comes to dealing with Azzuri’s Black Panther. “I’m more concerned with the six-foot cat man who’s got claws that can cut through Vibranium alloy”, the story trailer reveals Captain America’s mistrust when he says this.
“By my count, that makes two super-soldiers loose in Paris. And that’s two too many.”
Captain America and Black Panther join forces in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
Black Panther wants to complete his mission before Steve Rogers interferes
Azzuri’s Black Panther, aided by the Wakandan spy network, is also on a solo mission and plans to complete it before Captain America interferes. He wants to achieve his mission by arriving first, “before sunrise, before the Germans, before the American”, he says to Nanali.
Black Panther does begin earlier than the rest, but Nanali warns him (through advanced Wakandan gadgetry, we assume, since it is 1940’s), that “the American boy is right on your heels.” Both super soldiers head for the same spot of interest, although Azzuris’ Black Panther is the first to start the proceedings by infiltrating the suspicious Nazi centre of operations. It looks like he took Nanali’s advice by avoiding the streets and using rooftops to travel.
Captain America is close behind Black Panther. He adopts a more direct method of attack, unlike Azzuri’s stealth-based methods. When he spots Black Panther at the other end of a bridge, he throws his Vibranium shield in his direction, not aiming for the Black Panther, but close enough to serve as a warning. Cap's shield passes inches away from him on the left, hits a rock face, and comes back to Captain America from the other side, forcing Black Panther to turn back and look at him.
“That’s far enough”, shouts Steve Rogers.
Black Panther: “Stay out of my way”.
“Stand aside!”, shouts Steve Rogers as if expecting Black Panther would listen to that like a soldier.
The King of Wakanda replies: “I do not take orders from anyone!"
“I don’t have time for this,” says Captain America, bringing up his shield with his left hand and balling his right hand into a fist.
“Neither do I”, says Black Panther, getting into position for a leap attack. He does prance on Cap but Steve Rogers uses his Vibranium shield to deflect Black Panther’s oncoming clawed gloves. Later in the trailer, the duo is shown to be locked into a stalemate of sorts.
Though both Marvel superheroes start on the wrong foot in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, they are ultimately going to unite to stop Hydra’s plans. There is a mention of “the Eye of the Force”, which could be something powerful Hydra wants to get a hold of.
The reason why Captain America and Black Panther do not want to work together is not stated in the trailer. We are sure more story-related details will come our way before Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra launches in 2025. We are also waiting for a gameplay trailer for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
