A Reddit post comparing life in Gurgaon and Bengaluru has triggered a heated debate online, with residents weighing in on which city offers better infrastructure and overall quality of life.
The post, shared by user @dconhue under the title “Gurgaon vs Bengaluru: My personal experience of living in both”, detailed first-hand observations of civic amenities, roads, safety and waste management in the two cities.
According to the post, Gurgaon projects the image of being a premier corporate hub but falls short in basic facilities. The user wrote that potholes are widespread and in some cases life-threatening, even outside luxury apartments valued at Rs. 20 crore. They also criticised poor waste management and open drains, describing a foul smell in several areas. Safety concerns were highlighted as well, with the user claiming that arguments often escalate quickly and incidents of local crime are not uncommon.
Public transport in Gurgaon was another area of criticism. The post described the city’s bus stand as being in a state of neglect, “not even resembling a proper bus stand”, which the writer found ironic for a city that brands itself as the “Millennium City”.
In comparison, Bengaluru was described as better organised, although not without challenges. The post noted that most roads were in reasonable condition, with potholes generally linked to metro construction projects. While traffic congestion was highlighted as a major problem, the user felt that the system was at least attempting to handle the pressure of population growth.
Civic sense was cited as another difference. The user observed that Bengaluru neighbourhoods were cleaner, with fewer garbage-filled areas and more collective effort to maintain surroundings. They concluded that Bengaluru offered far greater liveability compared to Gurgaon, writing that while Gurgaon had glossy high-rises and luxury cars, these only concealed deeper problems of broken infrastructure and neglect.
The post drew a wide range of reactions from Redditors, many sharing their own experiences of living in both cities. One commenter argued that Gurgaon’s proximity to Delhi gave it an edge and that Bengaluru would take decades to match the capital’s infrastructure. Another disagreed, saying that Bengaluru’s roads were far from perfect and often dangerous.
Others shared more balanced views. A user pointed out that Chandigarh offered a much better quality of life than both cities, despite not having as many multinational companies. Another commenter, who had lived in both Bengaluru and Gurgaon, said they strongly preferred Bengaluru due to its overall environment and civic sense. Echoing that sentiment, one user added that Gurgaon was little more than concrete buildings without reliable water, electricity or security.
