Bengaluru traffic police will book drivers who exceed the 80kmph speed limit on the airport road, where cameras have been installed to catch violators following a rise in accidents on the busy stretch.
"Given increasing road traffic accidents on Kempegowda International Airport Road, particularly due to over-speeding by drivers/riders, and to enhance road safety, speed trap cameras have been installed on the stretch of airport road to automatically detect and fine over-speeding traffic violations," joint commissioner of police (Bengaluru Traffic) MN Anucheth said on May 14.
The speed limit on the airport road is 80 km per hour. Those exceed the limit would be fined for over-speeding traffic violations, the officer said.
The airport road accounted for around 9 percent of accidents in Bengaluru, he said. The elevated expressway (Bellari Road) to Kempegowda International Airport is one of the most accident-prone roads in the city, with motorists often exceeding 100 kmph.
Most accidents on the road occur between 3 am and 6 am and 7 pm and 11pm, with two-wheeler riders and pedestrians the most vulnerable.
Bengaluru traffic police records show that accidents on the airport road have increased from 239 in 2021 to 278 in 2022 and further to 322 in 2023. Between January and April of this year, 110 accidents were reported on the airport road.
Overall accident numbers in Bengaluru have also seen an increase: 3,213 in 2021, 3,822 in 2022, and 4,974 in 2023. Until April 2024, 1,633 accidents have been reported.
Traffic diversions

KR Puram up-ramp of the Hebbal flyover will be closed to all vehicles till the completion of the work. Traffic police has urged motorists to use alternative routes.

Commuters travelling from the KR Puram side towards the city should use IOC-Mukunda Theater Road, Lingarajapuram flyover route and Nagawara-Tannery Road.
Those coming from Hegdenagar-Thanisandra can use the GKVK-Jakkur road to enter the city.
Commuters moving from KR Puram towards Yeswantpur can move straight below Hebbal flyover towards BEL Circle, take a left turn at BEL Circle to reach Sadashivanagar police station junction, and then take a right turn to move towards IISc and onwards to Yeswantpur. Commuters moving towards the airport from KR Puram, Hennur, HRBR layout, Banasawadi, KG Halli and surrounding areas should use the Hennur- Bagalur Road to reach the airport, the release said.
