Grimsby’s goalkeeper, Christy Pym, confessed he was “half-fuming” even after playing the decisive role in a memorable Carabao Cup shock against the very team he has supported since childhood.
After a 2-2 draw at a boisterous Blundell Park, the Manchester United supporter assisted his League Two team in eliminating the 20-time English champions with a 12-11 penalty shootout victory.

“It’s not sunk in yet. I’m a Man Utd fan, so I’m half-fuming a little bit," Pym joked afterwards.
“Nights like this are what you play football for. Just brilliant. I should have done a little bit better (in the shootout), shouldn’t I? I made one save to keep us in it and the boys did the rest. It’s brilliant."
Charles Vernam scored a low goal to start United's nightmare, but Tyrell Warren, a graduate of the Old Trafford academy, jumped on Andre Onana's mistake to double Grimsby's lead. Harry Maguire headed a late equalizer and Mbeumo curled home, but Amorim's team was unable to avoid humiliation.
It was Grimsby's first encounter with United since 1948, and it will go down as one of the team's most memorable nights.
The Mariners will now play Sheffield Wednesday of the Championship in round three, which takes place from September 15–22.
In defeat, manager Ruben Amorim provided scant consolation. “I felt my players spoke really loud today what they want," he said. “The way we started the game, we were not even here. Everything that happened is a problem in our club. I just have to say sorry to our fans."
When asked if penalties affected how the outcome was seen, he said: “Doesn’t matter. Football was really fair today. The best team won."
