Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has praised BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who was elected unopposed as the next chairman of the International Cricket Council on Tuesday. As per his conversation with the Times of India, Gavaskar remarked that "it won’t be a surprise if the world game flourishes even more during his term as the ICC chairman."

At 35, Shah is the youngest person ever to assume this prestigious role.

Commenting on Jay Shah's succession of Greg Barclay as ICC chairman, Gavaskar said: "That’s wonderful news. All the ICC presidents from India have advanced the game and generated more revenue for the ICC and its member countries. If one sets aside political biases, it is clear that Jay Shah has made significant strides for Indian cricket."

Gavaskar highlighted Shah's achievements as BCCI secretary since 2019, noting, "He was chiefly responsible for launching the Women's Premier League (WPL), equalised the fees for Indian women international cricketers with those of the men’s team, increased pensions for retired cricketers, introduced incentives for availability for Test and white-ball internationals, and introduced prize money for domestic tournaments. Additionally, the new state-of-the-art National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore was established during his tenure."
