India's first World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev offered his thoughts on the much debated India-Pakistan match at the Asia Cup. He advised fans not to make it a major issue, stating that "the government will do its job, and the players should do theirs."
Since the Asia Cup 2025 schedule was revealed, there has been a constant discussion on whether India and Pakistan should play cricket together, especially considering the tense political ties in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Nonetheless, the BCCI has insisted that it is bound by the central government's policy, which allows participation in international competitions but prohibits bilateral series with Pakistan.
"Just go and win. Those whose job is to play should just focus on playing - there's no need to say anything else. Don't make this a big issue. The government will do its job, and the players should do theirs," Kapil Dev said while speaking to reporters on Thursday.
Political tensions and security concerns have prevented cricketing exchanges between India and Pakistan, with the last bilateral series between them being in 2012–13. Now, the two nations only clash during ICC and ACC competitions.
The 17th Asia Cup began on September 9 and is officially being hosted by India. However, both teams have avoided playing on each other's territory because of the continuous hostilities between them. As a result, the event is being held in the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
India launched their title defence in style, thrashing UAE by nine wickets. The bowlers skittled the opposition for just 57 in 79 balls, and wrapped the chase in mere 27 deliveries.
In response to India's victory in the first match, Kail Dev stated, "The team is very good and has secured an impressive victory. We hope they bring the trophy home."
