Earlier, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched 65 runs for the first wicket before the partnership was broken by Keshav Mahraj. The spinner dismissed Rahul for 22, which was followed by a 30-run stand between Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan before disaster struck. The former was dismissed for 58 by Simon Harmer, and two more breakthroughs followed in the opening session. Sudharsan was removed for 15, while Dhruv Jurel returned without troubling the scorers. India were batting at 102/4 heading into Tea.
South Africa maintained the tempo as proceedings got underway in the second session. Rishabh Pant fell victim to a rash short, which led to him getting caught-behind on 7 against Marco Jansen. Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy also couldn't do much, scoring 6 and 10 respectively. Washington Sundar hung around in the middle and found decent support from Kuldeep Yadav as there were no further inroads in the session.
Together the pair of Sundar and Kuldeep added 72 runs for the eighth wicket before Harmer got the former caught at slip for 48. Kuldeep, on the other hand, showed excellent resilience and grinded for 134 balls for his 19 before getting out to Marco Jansen, which was also the final wicket of the innings. Jansen returned with six scalps, while Harmer, who was named Player of the Match in the last Test at Kolkata, picked three.
South Africa had previously piled a massive 489/10 in the first innings after winning the toss and opting to bat. The Proteas batted for almost two days as Senuran Muthusamy scored a ton coming in at No. 7 and bowling all-rounder Marco Jansen further rubbed salt in India's wounds by smashing a 91-ball 93.
