The former England captain smashed 150 as England finished the day at 544/7, stretching the lead to 186 runs. Ben Stokes, who returned to bat after retiring himself out earlier, was batting on 77, and joining him at the other end was Liam Dawson on 21.
The day began with Root and Ollie Pope dominating the Indian bowlers. The pair added 144 runs for the third wicket and in the process Root smashed multiple records. He then went to slam his 38th Test century - 12th against India, which put him on top of the tally among batters with most tons against them. Root also jumped to No. 2 in the list of batters with most Test runs, and now stands only behind 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar.
After Pope, who was dismissed for 71 by Washington Sundar, Root was involved in another 100-plus stand with his skipper Ben Stokes. Together they took England from 349/4 to 491/4 before Stokes retired hurt and walked back to the dressing room. Stokes was then batting at 66(116). Root was stumped shortly after off Ravindra Jadeja's bowling and received a warm ovation as he walked back to the pavilion.
Jamie Smith was caught-behind for 9 against Jasprit Bumrah. Stokes walked out to bat again after the fall of seventh wicket, which was claimed by Mohammed Siraj.
England had resumed proceedings on Day 3 from the overnight total of 225/2, trailing by 133 runs.
