IND vs ENG Highlights, 5th Test Day 1 stumps: On a rain-affected first day of the fifth and final Test between India and England, the visitors ended play at 204 for six. Only 64 overs could be completed due to multiple weather interruptions at the venue on Thursday.
At stumps, Karun Nair remained unbeaten on 52, while Washington Sundar was on 19. The extended final session proved the most productive for India as they added 119 runs for the loss of three wickets across 35 overs.
The middle session saw just six overs of play, during which India lost captain Shubman Gill, who was run out for 21 after a misjudged single. Rain returned soon after, bringing the session to an early close and prompting tea to be taken.
In the morning, England made early inroads. Gus Atkinson struck first, trapping opener Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for 2. Soon after, Chris Woakes breached KL Rahul’s defence, bowling him for 14 and reducing India to 38 for two.

The weather finally cleared up, and this time for good, allowing for an extended final session of two and a quarter hours. Josh Tongue, who had struggled for control in his first spell, continued to be erratic in the evening. He sprayed it around but found success when he got it right, removing Sai Sudharsan first and then Ravindra Jadeja. That summed up England’s bowling effort for the day in helpful conditions. Despite the wickets they picked up, there was a recurring issue of inconsistency in line and length. Gus Atkinson held his own at one end, but whoever operated from the other lacked control and discipline.

Earlier, Shubman Gill lost his fifth toss of the series under overcast skies. Ollie Pope had no hesitation in inserting the tourists on a green-tinged surface, and Gus Atkinson, returning to the side, struck early to give England a promising start. KL Rahul also fell rather cheaply before Gill and Sai Sudharsan managed to stitch together a partnership, with the former particularly quick to put away anything loose. A sudden heavy shower brought about an early end to the morning session, and the second session saw only 30 minutes of play before rain intervened again. But even in that brief passage, India suffered a setback as their skipper was run out.

Yes, they have managed to pick up six wickets, but as Stuart Broad pointed out on air, England bowled less in the channel today than at any point in the series, a telling stat that underlines their inconsistency with line and length.
