The day began with Jasprit Bumrah running riot in the opening session. The pacer injected three blows after England resumed from the overnight total of 251/4. Root completed his 37th Test century before getting out to Bumrah on 104. Stokes too was castled by Bumrah on 44 and the pacer added a third wicket by getting rid of Chris Woakes for 0. However, Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse stitched a rescue act and negated India's advantage with a valuable 84-run partnership. Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj then combined to wrap the England innings after play resumed in the second session. Bumrah registered a five-wicket haul, making Jofra Archer his fifth victim, as England were all-out for 387.
Meanwhile, Day 1 turned out to be the slowest of the series so far. Despite Ben Stokes choosing to bat first, run-scoring proved to be a challenge — highlighting just how testing the conditions were for the batters. The surface at Lord’s offered noticeable support to India’s bowlers, who managed to pick up four wickets before stumps. Root, in particular, stood out with a composed knock, ending the day just one run away from a century.
