Afghanistan created history in the ongoing T20 World Cup when they defeated Australia by 21 runs in Kingstown in a Super 8 game and kept their hope of reaching the semi-finals alive. Gulbadin Naib, who collected a history-making four wickets, confirmed that this team's best is yet to come. Maybe at this T20 World Cup, maybe not. But make no mistake, Afghanistan isn’t going anywhere as a cricketing force.
After the win, the Afghan players celebrated the win over Australia in the team's dressing room, and in a video shared by the Afghanistan Cricket Board, players shared their feelings and emotions of beating Australia in the game. First was opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz who played a crucial knock said in the video, "They(Australia) hurt us in 50-over World Cup and we hurt them in 20-over World and I was hungry for them(Australia). Next Rashid Khan said, " 23 October( Afghanistan defeating Pakistan by 8 wickets in ODI World Cup) and 23 June( Afghanistan beating Australia by 21 runs in T20 World Cup), both write in the history, 50 over, 20 over, 23 is favourite number now," a happy Rashid Khan said
Meanwhile, post-match Rashid Khan said, “It’s a massive win for us as a team and as a nation.” “Super proud of the guys and how they delivered. It’s just the beginning now, for us, and (it’s) a big game next one (against Bangladesh) and we have all the chances to get to the semis.” “Our journey starts now,” Gulbadin said when collecting his Player of the Match award.
“(Australia) is a big team, a world champion team, so for our cricket, it’s a big achievement (that) we can carry to the next level. In the last 10 years, we achieved a lot of goals, so this is a big achievement in our cricket. It’s a great moment, not only for me, but for my nation, and my people. We were waiting (to beat Australia) for a long time.”
Australia were all out for 127 in 19.2 overs in the Super Eight contest and they are now staring at early elimination from the World Cup. Australia now must win their match against India on Monday and also hope that Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in their next match.
