Yama Deepam 2025: Yama Deepam is also known as Deepdan for Yamraj, it is one of the most sacred rituals performed during Diwali. In 2025, Yama Deepam will be observed on Saturday, October 18, coinciding with Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. On this evening, a sacred lamp (Deepak) is lit outside the home to honour Lord Yama, the god of death. According to Hindu belief, this ritual protects family members from untimely death and brings peace, longevity, and protection to the household.

The festival of Diwali is not only a celebration of light but also a time to remember divine forces that maintain cosmic balance. Yama Deepam symbolises gratitude toward Lord Yama, who governs life and death according to karma. Lighting a lamp for Him outside the home represents surrender, humility, and protection from misfortune. It is said that those who perform this ritual with devotion never face sudden or untimely death in their family.

Rituals of Deepdan for Yamraj (Yama Deepam Puja Vidhi)

• Clean the house entrance and decorate it with rangoli or sacred symbols.


• Prepare a small earthen diya (lamp) filled with mustard oil or ghee. Use a cotton wick for lighting.


• Place the diya facing south outside the main entrance of the house, as the southern direction is associated with Lord Yama.


• Chant the Yama Deepam mantra while lighting the diya:

“Mrityuna Pashadandaabhyaam Kaalaena Shyamyamayataha, Trayodashyantakam Deepam Dadyat Preetyai Yamasya Cha.”

• Pray for the wellbeing, protection, and long life of all family members.

Some devotees also offer water, sesame seeds, and prayers to ancestors (Pitrs) seeking blessings and peace for departed souls.
