Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as the sacred day when Goddess Ekadashi, the divine Shakti of Lord Vishnu, first appeared to destroy the demon Mura. This powerful fast is known for granting prosperity, protection, peace, and liberation, making it one of the most important Ekadashi observances in Hindu scriptures. Devotees believe that observing Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat with faith helps remove sins, overcome obstacles, and attain the grace of Lord Vishnu.
Origin of Goddess Ekadashi: How the Divine Shakti Appeared
According to the sacred narrative, Arjuna once asked Lord Krishna to explain the importance of Ekadashi, its benefits and its proper method. In response, Lord Krishna described the powerful story of Mura’s destruction and the origin of Goddess Ekadashi.
In ancient times, during the Satya Yuga, a fierce demon named Mura overpowered the gods. He drove Indra and other deities out of heaven, spreading fear and chaos across the worlds. When the distressed gods sought refuge, Lord Shiva guided them to Lord Vishnu, assuring that only Vishnu could end the demon's tyranny.
The Battle Between Lord Vishnu and Demon Mura
Lord Vishnu assured the gods that he would destroy their enemy. A fierce battle took place in Chandravati, the demon’s capital. Countless demons were destroyed, but Mura was exceptionally powerful. His radiance neutralized the divine weapons of Lord Vishnu, and the battle continued for a thousand years without conclusion.
After prolonged warfare, Lord Vishnu entered a cave named Hemavati at Badrika Ashram to rest. Seeing the Lord sleeping, demon Mura approached with the intention to kill Him. But at that moment, a divine radiant maiden emerged from Vishnu’s own body.
This celestial warrior challenged Mura and fought with immense strength. She destroyed his weapons, crushed his chariot, and finally severed his head. Mura died instantly, and the remaining demons fled in fear.
Goddess Ekadashi Receives a Divine Boon
When Lord Vishnu awoke and saw the demon slain, he asked who had performed this great act. The radiant maiden bowed and replied that she was born from His own divine power to protect Him.
Pleased with her devotion and strength, Lord Vishnu granted her a boon:
- Those who observe her fast will be freed from sins
- Devotees who keep Ekadashi with faith will attain prosperity and ultimately Vaikuntha
- She will be worshipped across the world as Ekadashi Devi
- Her fast will be more sacred than pilgrimages, yajnas, donations, or rituals
- Observing Ekadashi will remove sorrow, protect devotees, and lead to divine success
- Because she appeared on the Ekadashi tithi, she came to be known as Utpanna Ekadashi.
Lord Krishna explained to Arjuna that:
- Ekadashi is the most powerful fast among all vrats
- The results of Ekadashi are greater than major pilgrimages, donations, and yajnas
- People who observe Ekadashi become fearless and joyful
- Both Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha Ekadashi should be observed with equal respect
- Listening to or reading the Ekadashi Mahatmya is equal to performing an Ashwamedha Yajna
- Thus, Utpanna Ekadashi marks the beginning of Ekadashi fasting tradition and holds immense spiritual value.
Goddess Ekadashi is the divine energy of Vishnu who destroyed the powerful demon Mura when even the gods were helpless. The Shakti that protected the three worlds can destroy human sins and grant prosperity, peace and liberation. Observing Utpanna Ekadashi with devotion brings divine blessings, removes obstacles, and leads the devotee towards spiritual growth and Vaikuntha.
