Who Was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534 C.E.) was a great saint, philosopher, and proponent of the Bhakti movement. He is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Krishna by his followers and is credited with the revival and expansion of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. His teachings emphasized devotion to Krishna through kirtan (devotional singing), selfless love, and universal brotherhood. His followers, known as Gaudiya Vaishnavas, continue to spread his spiritual legacy worldwide.

Historical Background

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born on Phalguna Purnima in the year 1542 of the Vikram Samvat era. In the Julian calendar, his birth date was February 18, 1486 C.E. However, since the Gregorian calendar was not yet in use at that time, his birth date in the proleptic Gregorian calendar is recorded as February 27, 1486 C.E.
