The name Shailputri is derived from the Sanskrit words “Shail” meaning mountain, and “Putri” meaning daughter. Hence, Maa Shailputri is known as the ‘Daughter of the Mountain.’ She was born as the daughter of Lord Himalaya after the self-immolation of Goddess Sati. Because of this association, she is also referred to as Parvati or Hemavati. Her name symbolises strength, patience, and grounding.

Riding a bull, which is her vehicle, Maa Shailputri is also known as Vrisharudha. She is depicted with two hands—holding a Trishul (trident) in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left hand. The Moon, which is believed to govern emotions and mental balance, is the ruling planet of Maa Shailputri. By worshipping her, devotees seek relief from any malefic effects of the Moon in their horoscopes.

Worship of Maa Shailputri on the first day of Navratri is an auspicious start to the nine-day festival. The rituals involve invoking the Goddess with complete devotion and faith. Here's a step-by-step guide to performing the puja:

1. Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana): The first step involves establishing a sacred Kalash (pot) filled with water and placing mango leaves at its mouth. The Kalash is then covered with a coconut. This ritual marks the beginning of Navratri and symbolises the invocation of the Goddess.
