In a remarkable blend of tradition and modern technology, ISKCON Kolkata has taken a giant leap for this year’s Rath Yatra 2025. For the first time, Sukhoi fighter jet tyres have been fitted to Lord Jagannath’s main chariot, replacing the Boeing aircraft tyres used for nearly five decades.
The much-awaited Rath Yatra festival will take place on June 27, drawing thousands of devotees onto the streets of Kolkata. This innovative upgrade marks a milestone in the procession's history, offering better safety, durability, and performance for the divine chariot.
Why Sukhoi Tyres Were Chosen for Lord Jagannath's Chariot?
For the past 48 years, the chariot wheels used tyres from retired Boeing aircraft. However, sourcing those tyres had become difficult since Dunlop—the original manufacturer—ceased operations. According to ISKCON Kolkata Vice President Radharaman Das, the tyres had been causing issues, and the search for a suitable replacement spanned nearly 20 years.
“We were facing issues with the old tyres… Dunlop had shut down, and we couldn’t find a proper alternative,” said Das.
After thorough research, ISKCON discovered that tyres made for the Sukhoi 4th generation fighter aircraft matched the chariot’s size and weight requirements. They reached out to MRF, the tyre manufacturer, who inspected the chariot in December 2023.
Following the inspection, Sukhoi tyres were installed on the main wooden chariot. A 20-kilometre trial run was carried out in Kolkata on May 31, and the results were promising. The chariot rolled smoothly, with no structural issues, thanks to necessary modifications done in advance.
Each tyre can support up to 16 tonnes of load, ensuring a safe and smooth ride for Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra and the return journey, Ultorath, scheduled for July 5.
“This is probably the first time in India—or even Asia—that fighter jet tyres are being used in a religious chariot procession,” said Das. ISKCON had first installed aircraft tyres back in 1977, but the use of Sukhoi tyres in 2025 is seen as a revolutionary step. While Lord Jagannath’s chariot will now glide on Sukhoi tyres, the chariots for Balabhadra and Subhadra will continue to use traditional iron wheels.
The initiative represents a unique intersection of devotion and innovation. With thousands of devotees expected to participate in this year’s Rath Yatra in Kolkata, the upgraded tyres are expected to offer a safer, smoother, and more durable experience for both the deity and the followers.
This fusion of aerospace-grade engineering with ancient religious tradition is a glowing example of how modern solutions can enhance sacred customs without compromising their essence.
