On the eve of Holi, people gather to perform Holika Dahan, also known as Chhoti Holi. Bonfires are lit after sunset at the right Holika Dahan Muhurat, symbolizing the burning away of evil and negativity. In South India, this ritual is referred to as Kama Dahanam.
Day 2: Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi)
The main day of Holi, also known as Rangwali Holi, is filled with colors, music, and laughter. People throw Gulal (dry colors) and splash wet colors on friends and family. Some prefer playing with dry colors, while others mix colors in water to drench one another completely. This day is also called Dhulandi or Dhulendi, with variations like Dhuleti and Dhulheti in different regions.
On the morning of Rangwali Holi, streets, parks, and homes come alive with people playing, singing, and dancing. Delicious treats like gujiya, thandai, and malpua add to the festive spirit. It is a time to mend relationships, forgive past grievances, and spread love and joy.
