Heramba Sankashti is dedicated to the worship of Heramba Ganapati, one of the 32 forms of Lord Ganesha. Depicted with five heads and ten arms and riding a lion, Lord Heramba is revered as the Protector of the helpless and the weak. The term Heramba derives from Sanskrit, where He means helpless and Ramba means to protect.
According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, worshipping Heramba Ganapati helps devotees overcome major obstacles and challenges in life. This fast is also associated with the story of Queen Damayanti, who, on the advice of Maharishi Sharabhanga, observed the Heramba Sankashti Vrat to be reunited with her husband, King Nala.
Heramba Sankashti Chaturthi Rituals and Puja Vidhi
- Early Morning Preparations: Devotees begin the day by waking up during Brahma Muhurta (around 4–6 AM). After taking a holy bath, they wear clean clothes, preferably in red or yellow, which are considered auspicious for Lord Ganesha.
- Puja Setup: An idol or image of Heramba Ganapati is placed on a clean altar, decorated with flowers, mango leaves, and rangoli. Offerings such as durva grass, red flowers, fresh fruits, modaks, and laddus are arranged for the puja.
- Observing the Sankashti Vrat: The fast is observed from sunrise to moonrise. Some devotees follow a nirjal vrat (without water), while others may consume fruits, milk, or water as part of a partial fast. The intention is to maintain purity of body and mind throughout the day.
- Chanting and Prayers: Special prayers are dedicated to Heramba Ganapati by reciting the Heramba Ganapati Stotra and the Ganesh Atharvashirsha. Devotees also read or listen to the Heramba Sankashti Vrat Katha, which narrates the spiritual significance of the day.
- Moonrise Ritual: The fast is broken only after sighting the moon, which is expected at 9:00 PM in 2025. Devotees offer arghya—a mixture of water, sandalwood paste, rice, and flowers—to the moon before resuming their meal.
- Distribution of Prasad: The offerings made to Lord Heramba during the puja, such as modaks and laddus, are distributed as prasad among family members and other devotees, marking the completion of the day’s rituals.
