Hartalika Teej falls on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. It is a sacred day dedicated to the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married women observe this nirjala fast (without food and water) for the well-being and long life of their husbands, while unmarried girls keep it to be blessed with an ideal partner like Lord Shiva.

Step-by-Step Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi
1. Lord Ganesha Puja
The rituals of Hartalika Teej begin with the worship of Lord Ganesha, who is invoked as Vighnaharta, the remover of all obstacles. Devotees clean the puja place, decorate it with flowers, and place Lord Ganesha’s idol. Offerings such as vermilion, durva grass, flowers, modaks, and sweets are made. A ghee lamp and incense are lit, followed by an aarti to seek his blessings.
2. Preparing the Shivling
Women make a Shivling out of clay and place it alongside the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This symbolizes the eternal bond between the divine couple.
3. Worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
After Lord Ganesha’s puja, devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Offerings of fruits, flowers, bilva leaves, and sacred items are made while reciting mantras and prayers. Women dress in solah shringar (16 adornments) and apply mehndi as part of the rituals.
4. Observing the Nirjala Fast
Women observe the Hartalika Teej vrat with complete dedication, refraining from food and water throughout the day. The fast continues until the next morning when it is broken after offering prayers to Goddess Parvati.
