Why Sandhya Arghya Matters?

Sandhya Arghya is the third and most significant day of the four-day Chhath festival. Performed at sunset while standing waist-deep in water, the offering symbolises humility, gratitude and renewal. By worshipping the setting Sun, devotees acknowledge life’s cycles and seek strength for the days ahead.

Spiritual Meaning of Sandhya Arghya
Sandhya Arghya is a direct dialogue with nature’s energy. The Sun, revered in Vedic tradition as the source of vitality and success, is worshipped to express gratitude for life’s blessings. The ritual teaches resilience: each sunset is followed by a new dawn.

Step-by-Step Arghya Vidhi (How to Offer Sandhya Arghya)

  1. Stand facing the setting Sun in a clean water body (or use a clean vessel at home).

  2. Hold a soop (bamboo basket) containing offerings: seasonal fruits, sugarcane, thekua, flowers and a lit diya.

  3. Slowly pour water and a little milk into the river or vessel while chanting: "Om Suryaya Namaha."

  4. Fold hands and pray for health, prosperity and family well-being. Women observing the fast break it only after completing this ritual.

  5. Conclude with a silent moment of gratitude and, if possible, sing or listen to Chhath songs and bhajans.

If a ghat is unavailable, devotees can perform the ritual at home with collected, clean water - sincerity of devotion matters most.

Surya Mantras & Chants
Common mantra to recite while offering Arghya: “Om Suryaya Namaha”. Devotees may also chant traditional Chhath hymns and local folk songs to accompany the ritual.
