US: Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi refrain from immediately endorsing Kamala Harris as presidential nominee

Former US President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commended President Joe Biden for his decision to withdraw from the presidential race. However, they did not explicitly endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's nominee for the November 5 general elections.

Biden, aged 81, announced his withdrawal from the presidential race following increasing pressure from Democrats, particularly after a challenging debate performance against Republican candidate Trump last month. Biden has endorsed 59-year-old Harris to succeed him as the new Democratic nominee.

Although Harris's nomination as her party's presidential nominee is all but assured by Biden's support, she still needs to be chosen by the party's delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago the following month. Against the 1,976 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, Biden has 3,896 delegates in his pocket.

Harris was able to win the delegate fight at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago starting on August 19 because she was able to instantly get the backing of former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
