Pope Francis diagnosed with double pneumonia: What it means and latest updates

Following a respiratory infection, Pope Francis, the 88-year-old head of the 1.4-billion-member Roman Catholic Church, is in hospital being treated for double pneumonia also known as bilateral pneumonia.

Francis, who has been hospitalised for a while now after being plagued by a string of lung-related medical struggles showed 'slight improvement', Vatican said. His 'clinical conditions are stable', they added.

WHAT IS DOUBLE PNEUMONIA?

Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. The pope has bilateral pneumonia, known informally as double pneumonia, and means both lungs are affected.
