Former President Barack Obama has so far stayed away from endorsing Kamala Harris as the party's new US Presidential candidate even as many Democratic leaders have already backed her. Obama thinks that Harris cannot beat Republican candidate Donald Trump in the November election, according to a source close to the Biden family.
A few days back, 81-year-old US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democratic Party's nominee. While most of the Democratic leaders were quick to rally behind Harris, Obama, the 44th US President has held off so far.
“Obama’s very upset because he knows she can’t win,” the Biden family source told The New York Post.
“Obama knows she’s just incompetent — the border czar who never visited the border, saying that all migrants should have health insurance. She cannot navigate the landmines that are ahead of her.”
Harris, 59, is the first woman, a Black person, and a person of South Asian descent to serve as Vice President. She joined the Biden ticket after a rocky and abbreviated run of her own for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
Biden said that deciding on Harris as Vice President was “the best decision I've made”.
He wrote on social media platform X that she had his full support and endorsement to run against Donald Trump for the presidency.
"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," he said.
Biden’s message to the Democrats came soon after he wrote to fellow Americans on his decision not to run for the presidency in the November elections amidst mounting pressure from his senior party leaders after a disastrous presidential debate performance against his Republican rival and former US president Donald Trump last month.
