The Indian defence forces are maintaining a close watch on the situation that is emerging in Pakistan following the arrest of Imran Khan, news agency ANI reported, citing defence sources.

Pakistan witnessed widespread clashes and mayhem on the streets after former premier Imran Khan was arrested by the country's paramilitary force on May 9.

The supporters of his party, Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf, stormed the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the corps commanders' residence in Lahore, local media reports said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code were issued in the provinces of Punjab and Balochistan, as the protests turned violent. Several police vehicles were torched, and scores were left injured in the clashes that broke out.

The government has snapped social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, to stop the circulation of rumours and misinformation, an official said.
