In a sensational claim that sounds straight out of a thriller novel, a former officer of Russia’s KGB has alleged that US President Donald Trump was recruited as a spy by the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1987.
In a recent Facebook post, the official, identified as Alnur Mussayev, claimed that Trump was recruited by the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB). Mussayev further stated that Trump was assigned the codename Krasnov.
According to the viral Facebook post, Trump, who was 40 at the time, was visiting the USSR in the 1980s when the spy agency contacted him. Mussayev said that he worked in the 6th Directorate of the USSR KGB in Moscow, whose main role was to recruit business leaders from "capitalist nations." He claimed that his department had successfully recruited the "American real estate tycoon."
While Trump has denied any connection with the Russian administration or the KGB, this is not the first time allegations have surfaced regarding his shadowy ties. Back in 2017, a dossier by ex-British intelligence officer Christopher Steele had also revealed that Russia had compromising material or ‘kompromat’ on Trump. The Steele dossier had a video purportedly showing Trump in a Moscow hotel.
However, Mussayev’s allegations are not new. Back in 2021, another former KGB official, Yuri Shvets, made similar claims in a book titled American Kompromat by Craig Unger. The book alleged that Trump was recruited as a spy by Russia in the 1980s.
