The novel coronavirus outbreak, or COVID-19, has been declared a ‘pandemic’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO). It has spread across at least 124 countries. There have been 73 confirmed cases in India so far. Two cases were reported in Mumbai yesterday.
Globally, there have been over 1.2 lakh confirmed cases of COVID-19. At least 4,600 people have died so far — majority of them in China. Infections have steadily risen in Iran, Italy, South Korea and the United States. The outbreak is having a major impact on global economy and the stock market. Catch the updates here:

Coronavirus infections in Spain soared to nearly 3,000 on Thursday as the number of deaths almost doubled, rising to 84, the health ministry said.
As of 1200 GMT, there were 2,968 cases in Spain, up from 2,140 at 1700 GMT on Wednesday, a ministry statement said, with deaths leaping to 84 from 48 within the same time frame.

The new coronavirus outbreak "is a controllable pandemic" if countries step up measures to tackle it, the head of the World Health Organisation said on Thursday.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged on Wednesday that the global outbreak of the new coronavirus could now be considered a pandemic -- a disease actively spreading globally.
But he told diplomats in Geneva that describing the outbreak as a pandemic should not mean that countries give up the fight to stop it spreading further.
"This is a controllable pandemic," he said, according to a statement of his remarks.

The mother of a 46-year-old man, who tested positive for novel coronavirus, has also been detected with the virus, making her the sixth patient in the national capital, officials told news agency PTI.
The woman is aged 69 years and is admitted to RML Hospital. Her son has a history of travel to Japan, Geneva and Italy. They are residents of West Delhi's Janakpuri.
Eight other members of their family were found to be asymptomatic.

First COVID-19 case in AP as man who returned from Italy tests positive
A man who returned from Italy to Nellore last week tested positive for coronavirus, making it the first such case in Andhra Pradesh, the Medical and Health Department said here on Thursday.
The person developed dry cough and was admitted to the isolation ward in the government hospital at Nellore on his return from Italy on March 6.
"Tests on his blood samples at the virology lab in Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences in Tirupati confirmed positive for COVID-19," the Health department said in a release.

Scientists in Israel are expected to announce in the coming days that they have completed development of a vaccine for the new coronavirus COVID-19, according to a media report, according to news agency PTI.
Israeli daily Ha'aretz, quoting medical sources, reported on Thursday that scientists at the Israel's Institute for Biological Research, supervised by the Prime Minister's office, have recently had a significant breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of the virus, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine.
The development process, however, requires a series of tests and experiments that may last many months before the vaccination is deemed effective or safe to use, the report said.

Indian-origin doctor from Canada tests positive for COVID-19, kept in isolation at Lucknow's KGMU
A 35-year-old Indian-origin doctor from Canada, who came to visit her relatives here, has been tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) at the KGMU and her samples have been sent to Pune's National Institute of Virology for reconfirmation, a senior doctor said on Thursday.
She has been kept in an isolation ward while her husband, who had accompanied her, has also been tested but has been found to be negative in the two tests conducted on him, Professor D Himanshu of King George's Medical University's Medicine Department said. (PTI)
