United Nations Appeals Indonesia To Rescue Boat Carrying More Than 100 Rohingya Refugees

The United Nations refugee agency is urging the Indonesian government to rescue over 100 Rohingya refugees stranded off its western coast. The refugees, who are heavily persecuted in Myanmar, have risked their lives on perilous sea journeys to escape. Currently anchored about four miles off the coast of Aceh, the boat was recently moved closer to shore by a relief vessel. UNHCR protection associate Faisal Rahman emphasized the urgency of ensuring rescue and safe disembarkation for these vulnerable individuals. Reports indicate that at least one refugee has died on board, and five were evacuated for medical care. While many in Aceh sympathize with the Rohingya, there is also local frustration regarding the resources they consume. Indonesia, not a signatory to the UN refugee convention, is calling for neighboring countries to share the responsibility for resettling Rohingya refugees. The situation underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by this ethnic group.
