Suspected gas blast at Taiwan mall claims at least five lives, many injured | N18G

A suspected gas explosion occurred at the Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung, Taiwan, on February 13, 2025. The explosion happened on the 12th floor, where construction work was taking place, with damage spreading from the 9th floor upwards. At least five people were killed, and seven others were injured. The food court on the 12th floor was closed at the time due to the ongoing construction. Emergency services prioritized search and rescue efforts, with the city's mayor, Lu Shiow-yen, urging public cooperation to maintain safety at the scene. A total of 26 people were injured, and one individual was placed in the intensive care unit. Local authorities, including the fire department, have been actively managing the response to the incident. The blast's severity has left the community in shock, as officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
