French police evict hundreds of migrants occupying cultural centre in Paris | N18G

French police evicted hundreds of migrants from the Gaîté Lyrique cultural center in Paris on Tuesday, March 18, after they had occupied it for over three months. Many of the migrants, primarily from Guinea, had taken refuge in the building due to harsh winter conditions and a lack of housing options. Protesters gathered outside the center overnight, opposing the eviction.Most migrants left the building without force, but police briefly used tear gas to disperse demonstrators before they regrouped. Dialo Ammediou, a migrant from Guinea, explained that they had no alternative but to occupy the space to avoid sleeping outdoors. Another migrant, 16-year-old Dialo Abdelrahman, criticized France’s treatment of immigrants, especially given its colonial history. The eviction highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants in France, as they struggle with homelessness and legal uncertainties while seeking asylum or better living conditions.
