American tech millionaire and age-reversal fanatic Bryan Johnson, recently in Mumbai to promote his new book ‘Don’t Die’, shared his experience with the city’s air. Despite taking rigorous precautions, including using air purifiers in his hotel room and wearing an N95 mask outdoors, Johnson revealed on X that his “throat and eyes burn,” calling the situation a “serious health concern.”
Johnson’s remarks came in response to a post by Indian-origin entrepreneur Debarghya Das, who highlighted the pervasive health issues caused by pollution in India. Das wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Every time I’m in India, I notice my eyes water more, I blow my nose more, and people in general cough more. My parents always said these were ‘allergies,’ but whenever they visit me in the US, these ‘allergies’ disappear. We live in denial of a massive health crisis.”
Acknowledging the grim reality, Johnson replied: “This is accurate. I arrived in Mumbai yesterday and even with air purifiers in my hotel room and wearing a N95 mask outside, my throat and eyes burn. I agree, it’s a pretty serious health situation.”
Many commenters noted the stark differences in air quality between India and other countries, emphasising the long-term health impacts of such exposure. One social media user lamented, "We’re sacrificing countless productive years by failing to tackle this crisis."
Critics pointed out how India's affluent classes often evade the harshest effects of pollution. “Most of elite India lives in their air-purified homes, gets into air-purified cars, and avoids the outdoors entirely,” read one comment.
Mumbai’s air quality pales compared to Delhi, which regularly tops global pollution charts with citizens often reporting respiratory issues, watery eyes, and chronic coughing. As one commenter quipped, “Bro has no idea what Delhi has in store for him.”
During his stay in Mumbai, Bryan Johnson attended an exclusive event at Soho House, where he interacted with Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal and comedian Tanmay Bhat, alongside 50 specially invited guests.
