Going by the guide-book is something I never recommend. But in Arunachal Pradesh, it’s the only way to take in all the breath-taking beauty without missing out. What the state lacks in monuments, bustling market places and tourist spots, it makes up for in valleys, waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes. In the eastern-most part of India, this gem has travellers marvelling at its tranquil beauty and acres of unspoiled green pastures.
Whether you’re on family vacation, going on a soul-searching quest or someone who seeks adventure, there are a few places that you need to have on your travel check-list.
Tezu is a must-visit spot that is located in Lohit. A land of surging waterfalls, rocky mountains and undulating hills, it looks as pretty as it sounds. A visit to Tezu is like taking a trip back in time – the area is scattered with people from the Mishmi tribe, a people who is untouched by modernization and unaware about city life.
The place where the Lohit and Delai rivers meet is called Hayuliang – a tiny, idyllic village where you can sit back and relax. One needs to travel 100 kms or so from Tezu to breathe in the cool, pleasant air that Hayuliang offers, but once you taste the tranquillity; you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away.
Mechuka is one of the most renowned tourist spots in Arunachal Pradesh, located near the Indo-China border. Panoramic views of the countryside, dotted with roofs spread far apart is what one can see, standing 1830m above sea level. Take in the sights of the enchanting Buddhist Gumpas, the 300 year old Samten Yongcha monastery located on top of a hill and spend your days rafting and angling. This blissful place has tons of simple pleasures to offer tourists, adding to its popularity.
The Sella Pass connects Arunachal Pradesh to the Indian Subcontinent and is located in Tezpur. Driving along a motorable road 2244m above sea level will leave you nothing short of enchanted. As one passes through moving clouds, one gets a view of blue lakes, snow-capped mountains and stunning landscape.
Another interesting thing to do for thrill seekers is to visit Bhalukpong. The options for adventure are plenty – from hiking and trekking on one of the many hills to river rafting.
Mountains aside, Arunachal Pradesh has hill stations to offer too! Dirang is nestled in a picturesque valley between Bomdila and Tawang. The area is known for its kiwi and apple orchards and historical fort atop the hill and the sweet smell in the air is simply intoxicating. Nearby, Tawang captivates with beautiful lakes and the view it offers from 10000 feet above. Not only that, but it also holds one of India’s largest and oldest monasteries.
The best way to explore the untouched areas of this state is on foot, so carry along good walking shoes and a great camera to capture your priceless get-away moments against the beautiful backdrop.
