Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned professionals worldwide to prepare for sweeping changes as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, saying no role — not even his own — is immune.
“AI is the most profound technology humanity is ever working on, and it has potential for extraordinary benefits, and we will have to work through societal disruption,” Pichai told BBC in a recent interview. He acknowledged that while AI will create new opportunities, it will also phase out certain roles, forcing workers to adapt.
Contrary to the belief that only entry-level positions are at risk, Pichai stressed that all professions will feel the impact. “It will evolve and transition certain jobs,” he said. “People will need to adapt, and then there will be areas where it will impact some jobs. So, as a society, I think we need to be having those conversations.”
He even admitted his own role as CEO could be automated one day, calling it “one of the easier things” for AI to take over.
Adaption is key
Pichai urged professionals to embrace AI tools to stay relevant. “It doesn’t matter whether you want to be a teacher, a doctor—all those professions will be around, but the people who will do well in each of those professions are people who learn how to use these tools,” he said.
'Don't change careers based on AI fears'
Despite concerns among Gen Z graduates entering an uncertain labour market, Pichai advised against changing career paths based on AI fears. “There is no golden-ticket college major or profession that is guaranteed to be safeguarded from AI,” he said, encouraging people to pursue careers they are passionate about while learning to adapt.
