A new wellness trend dubbed “fibermaxxing” is gaining traction on social media and unlike many viral health fads, this one has earned praise from nutrition experts for its science-backed benefits.

Fibermaxxing centres on increasing daily fibre intake to support digestion, weight management, and overall health. Fibre, a complex carbohydrate found in plant-based foods, isn’t digested in the small intestine. Instead, it fuels beneficial gut bacteria and helps regulate bodily functions.

“Common sources include whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds,” holistic nutritionist Denise Tam told South China Morning Post (SCMP). Seaweed and air-popped popcorn also count, though they’re less commonly recognised.

Fibre comes in two forms: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre, found in oats and fruit, forms a gel-like substance that softens stool. Insoluble fibre, found in vegetable skins and whole grains, acts like a broom, sweeping waste through the digestive system.
