A first-year student at Delhi University’s Hansraj College has ignited a widespread conversation across social media platforms after expressing frustration over her inability to secure an internship, despite her exceptional academic record.
The student, identified as Bisma Fareed, is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in English Honours and described herself as a college topper. In a widely circulated post, she revealed that she holds more than 50 certificates, over 10 medals, and more than 10 trophies—yet none of them helped her during internship interviews.
“I'm a topper, and I am unable to get an internship,” she wrote in her post, which has since gone viral. She candidly admitted that it took her time to accept a harsh reality: “skills matter more than marks.”
Fareed reflected on the prevailing mindset she encountered while growing up and during her academic journey.
“All my professors and teachers, and relatives said: focus on your studies! Padhai kaam aayegi, ye nahi! (Studies will help you, not all this),” she said.
She pointed out the disconnect between academic success and employability, arguing that today’s job market prioritises practical ability over theoretical knowledge.
“Companies don't want to hire toppers with no skills besides rote learning, but people who are proficient in a skill with decent marks,” she stated.
Fareed urged students to cultivate skills beyond academics.
“See, I’m not asking you to burn away your books and throw away your backpacks, all I’m asking you is to pick up a skill, practise it as a habit, master it and you will find immediate opportunities running after you!” she added.
Concluding her post, she reiterated the frustration of seeing her accolades yield no result when it came to internships.
“I have 50+ certificates, 10+ medals and 10+ trophies, but not a single one helped me in my internship interviews,” she wrote.
Her message quickly gained traction online, resonating with many who had experienced similar struggles in the transition from academia to the job market. It also sparked a broader debate around the relevance of academic marks versus skills in professional settings.
“Being a school or college topper might look good on paper, but in the real world, organisations value hands-on experience and practical skills far more than academic rankings,” one user commented.
Another echoed the sentiment: “As a topper myself, nothing has proven to be more true than this. The education system itself is underprepared to prepare its kids for the professional world.”
Some commenters also pointed out that while good marks can help in getting shortlisted, they are not sufficient on their own.
“Marks in competitive exams do matter and help you get jobs, or at least help you get into the interview room. The rest obviously depends upon your attitude and skills,” one user explained. “Marks till 12th standard do help in some cases with brutal competition, such as IIM or MBB interviews. So yes, good marks do matter. But what you offer at the table matters the most after shortlisting or getting the job.”
Another added that degrees and certifications can provide an entry point, but long-term success depends on what individuals bring to the role.
“Yes, degrees and certificates matter in the beginning, especially for interviews, but in the long run, it’s your skills that matter most. Unfortunately, schools and colleges still don’t focus much on that,” the user wrote.
