A medical professional’s reflection on how people experience holidays has prompted wide discussion across social media. Dr Sunita Sayammagaru, who shared her thoughts on X, said that travel — once meant to restore energy — has turned into a hurried pursuit of activities.
In her post, she observed that many people approach holidays as if they were completing assignments, trying to fit every landmark and experience into a tight schedule. She contrasted this with how her own family approaches travel.
"People now-a-days go on a holiday and come back tired! We go on a holiday and come back relaxed. I observed the difference. We go on a holiday, and just visit that one place or perhaps a neighboring place. We visit places in a leisure manner," she wrote.
According to Sayammagaru, they typically choose a single destination, occasionally visiting one or two nearby spots, but avoid trying to see everything. “We know we can’t see everything, and that’s okay,” she wrote, adding that slowing down allows them to return home refreshed rather than weary.
She said that what she often notices in others is a pattern of constant movement and anxiety about “what comes next,” which leaves travellers more tired than when they began. Her post questioned whether a trip that leaves people physically and mentally drained could truly be called a break.
Her comment — “When a trip meant to relax you starts stressing you out, is it really a holiday anymore?” — drew widespread agreement. Many users responded that they too often felt exhausted after their vacations rather than rejuvenated.
Sayammagaru's post went viral and attracted a number of varied comments. While some users supported her stance, a section of users defended travellers saying maximum people travel on a budget.
"Absolute truth in 01 tweet. We do this as well. Max 2-3 places in the same location in a week. If it’s a beach then toh the whole week just soaking the waters. Vacays aren’t supposed to be draining," a user wrote.
Another user commented, "Not everyone has that luxury. I got Europe visa once and don't know when will I ever get. I want to check some tick boxes before I leave Europe. It's ok to plan as per your budget. Not everyone is rich to visit Eiffel tower in one trip then do second trip to see Louvre museum."
"People have to put on WhatsApp display pics, status videos, Instagram reels, Twitter updates, Facebook status, Apple checkins, Snapchat updates, TikTok posts - it’s not easy madam," a user quipped.
