All about Mephedrone, aka the 'meow meow' drug, seized by police, worth Rs 2,000 crore

In recent years, the synthetic stimulant drug known as Mephedrone, or 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC), has emerged as a significant global concern due to its harmful effects and widespread use, which has now emerged in India as well.

1100kg of mephedrone, also known commonly as the “meow meow” drug, estimated to be worth more than Rs 2,000 crore, was seized following raids in Pune and New Delhi and police arrested three people in this case and detained two others.

What is Mephedrone?
Mephedrone, originally marketed as a legal high or plant food, has been linked to a range of adverse effects on both physical and mental health. Users commonly report increased alertness, euphoria, and enhanced sociability, but these positive effects come at a cost.

Anxiety, paranoia, nausea, and insomnia are among the negative side effects experienced by individuals under the influence of this synthetic stimulant.

Moreover, prolonged use of Mephedrone has been associated with more severe consequences, including cardiovascular issues, hallucinations, and even instances of aggressive behaviour. The drug's impact on mental health raises concerns about its potential for addiction and long-term psychological harm.
